About the Role 


Manuscript Services belongs to the Publishing Solutions vertical and consists of highly educated Subject Matter Experts in various fields of science. All team members have studied their subject field up to Masters level and are well-informed of the developments in their field in science. The team provides manuscript and editorial support services across Springer Nature journal brands, including Nature Portfolio and BMC, and to other manuscript services such as the Transfer Desk.
Assistant Editors work with a global team and provide editorial support and operational oversight of the peer review process. This role will support the NPJ Series, a group of Nature Portfolio, Fully Open Access, academic journals that operate with a global team of external Editors, led by external Editors-in-Chief. A global team of in-house Publishers supports these external teams. Assistant Editors in this role will work on health and life science journals requiring additional scrutiny for Editorial Policy compliance, such as human and animal research ethics, clinical trials, and data availability policies. Applications are welcomed from candidates with previous experience in research academic publishing and quality assessment of submissions to health and life science journals.


Roles Responsibilities


  • Being responsible for the manuscript pipelines of a subset of NPJ Series journals that operate a Tier 1 and 2 model of editorial support


  • Completing Tier 1 and 2 checks on all submissions, comprising of initial technical checks and enhanced quality checks at revision, to ensure they meet the journal’s requirements for Editorial Policy


  • Be a trusted advisor to colleagues on the interpretation of journal editorial policies, supported by the Team Leader


  • Monitor the progress of manuscripts through all stages of the peer review process and provide support when needed


  • Supporting external Editors throughout all steps of the peer review process, creating excellent working relationships with them


  • Collaborating and building strong relationships with the internal Publishing team for continuous workflow improvement, updates, and new initiatives


  • Handling email correspondence between the various parties involved in the publication process (Authors, Reviewers, Editors, Guest Editors, Readers, etc.) for the journals you work on


  • Provide operational input on improving processes to reduce turnaround times


  • Provide training and support in signing-off new joiners in the team

Qualifications     


  • Educated to Masters degree level or equivalent in the Health Science /Life sciences/ Phyical Science (essential)


  • Previous experience in research academic publishing and in quality assessment of submissions to health and life science journals (essential)


  • A strong understanding of research ethics and data availability principles (desirable)
