Analyst  - GMNS Operational Excellence , Monitoring & Testing


The Global Merchant and Network Services Group brings together all of the American Express businesses that serve our key partners – merchants, banks, and strategic partners – to enable a sharp focus on using the power of our network to provide unique value to all of our mutual customers.


GMNS Operational Excellence team is part of American Express First Line of Defence responsible to drive risk-based decisioning and management of control and compliance objectives to support business priorities while promoting a strong risk culture. To that end, GMNS Operation Excellence, Monitoring and Testing team is responsible for developing and improving testing and monitoring strategies for GMNS business, with a strong focus on driving proactive risk identification and  developing Automated Key Risk Indicators (KRI).


Key Job Responsibilities:


There is an increased focus on ensuring comprehensive control coverage by analyzing data to assess impact, root cause and recommend mitigation strategies developing automated Key Risk Indicators. The role will support Operational Risk Identification and Development of  Key Risk Indicators to drive valuable insights and effective risk mitigation strategies focusing on design and development of Automated Key Risk Indicators leveraging Enterprise Capability of Smart Monitoring.The position requires the ability to support global initiatives and participate in special projects across multiple regions and time zones.


Responsibilities and key focus areas include:


  • Strong collaboration across GMNS business, Compliance, GCO,  Global Risk and Compliance, broader GMNS Operational Excellence teams,  Smart Monitoring CoE for forward-looking risk detection and lead development of Automated Key Risk Indicator
  • The role will understand critical business processes, conduct data analysis, and will support the development of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) for automated, near real-time risk monitoring as part of the Smart Monitoring capability.
  • The role also take a lead in more advanced development/coding strategies and support creation of meaningful insights from associated outcomes.
  • Lead exploration of the most complex data environments in GMNS.  Create recommendations and strategies for leveraging data findings to build more complex, yet efficient KRI logic structures.
  • Write KRI code (logic) by leveraging appropriate data after understanding detailed specifications of business processes, reviewing output of back-testing, and correcting and refining the logic to ensure that KRIs are working properly.
  • Assist in exploration of available KRI development capabilities and tools to identify opportunities to transition and create more effective development processes.
  • Perform advanced data analytics to identify trends, composition, leading indicators, outlook in operational risk and monitor efficacy of KRIs
  • Leverage unstructured data sources to identify potential process breakdowns and opportunities area

Qualifications:


  • 3-4+ year of experience with data-driven analytics/governance and risk management,
  • Preferred experience in financial services, risk management, internal control
  • Preferred Postgraduate degree Statistics/Mathematics/Economics/Engineering/Computer Science
  • Knowledge of risk management and risk governance framework
  • Prior Operational/Credit/Fraud Risk Management experience
  • Strong proven understanding of programming languages in SQL, Python
  • Proven understanding of data exploration on Cornerstone/ Lumi
  • Preferred understanding of Merchant and Network life cycle
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, particularly adept at storytelling
  • Experience compiling complex information and developing thoughtful material for presentation/updates
  • Should be a person with strong analytical thinking and skills who can undertake below steps independently:
    • Identify problems/opportunities at hand
    • Gather information on process flows, data, systems, and related losses/events
    • Develop hypothesis to opportunities/problems identified
    • Use data analytics to prove your hypothesis, identify root cause and size the impact
    • Draw conclusion based on analysis conducted
  • Self-motivated with the ability to operate independently and handle multiple workstreams and ad-hoc tasks simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to adjust quickly to shifting priorities, multiple demands, ambiguity, and rapid change.

Technical Skills and Platform Knowledge:


  • Expertise in MS- Excel, HIVE/SQL and Python
  • Application of statistical techniques
  • Knowledge of Big Data, Python
  • Preferred experience with COSMOS/Tableau/Archer/SharePoint

  1. Tier 1 college
  2. SQL hands on experience is a must
