General Purpose
Applies advanced knowledge of accounting principles, concepts, theories and techniques in conducting activities supporting the development, monitoring and maintenance of ledger accounts and generation of financial statements/reports.
Essential Functions
- Conducts specific activities as an individual contributor in support of maintaining/monitoring basic ledger accounts and generating routing reports for business units.
- Receives general guidance on assigned activities, conferring with leadership when appropriate.
- Collaborates with finance colleagues and internal HMI contacts to collect and validate data. Assists in communicating limited information under general supervision.
- May be assigned responsibility for maintaining specific databases and / or documented procedures to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
- Supports documentation processes in compliance with corporate financial guidelines.
- Performs special projects requiring research and analysis as requested for management decision-making.
- Responsible for Herman Miller and owned dealers sales tax customer setup process to meet tax compliance regulations and to guarantee accurate order production.
- Manage the sales tax credit/debit memo process by approving or denying credit/debit memos related to sales tax.
- Analyze sales tax related accounts receivable discrepancies and coordinates resolution of sales tax issues with other areas.
- Research sales tax laws to convey sales tax information to internal and external customers and stays abreast of sales tax matters.
- Issue appropriate sales tax exemption certificates for Herman Miller and subsidiaries.
- Prepare and file unclaimed property, business license, and sales tax renewals miscellaneous returns. Provides assistance with property tax returns.
- Responsible for cut-off activities and preparation of sales tax payments and reclass entries.
- Research and extract information for sales tax audits and analyze audit discrepancies.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting / finance or proven equivalent professional experience.
- 5 to 6 years US & Canada Sales and Use tax, accounting/finance experience.
- Ability to work independently on multiple projects with minimum supervision.
- Advanced understanding of broad accounting/finance fundamentals.
- Strong organizational, analytical, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use office automation/communication software and tools currently being used in the HMI office environment.
- Refined communication skills, e.g. verbal, written, interpersonal and presentation.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position
