about the role
Role Overview
The Patch Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the patching of network and security devices to ensure their security, stability, and performance. This includes devices such as Cisco core switches, routers, access points, wireless controllers, FortiGate firewalls, Check Point firewalls, Palo Alto firewalls, F5 devices, and Infoblox. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with patch management tools and automation techniques to efficiently apply patches and ensure compliance with security standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patch Management:
Plan, schedule, and manage the deployment of patches on network and security devices. Ensure timely application of patches and updates to critical devices, including Cisco switches, routers, firewalls, access points, and Infoblox. Coordinate with security and network teams to minimize downtime and ensure proper testing before applying patches in production environments. Maintain patching schedules, track patch progress, and provide regular updates to stakeholders. Identify, assess, and report on patching gaps or vulnerabilities across the network and security devices. Document patching activities, ensuring compliance with internal and industry standards.
Automation and Scripting:
Utilize DevOps methodologies and tools like
Ansible to automate patching tasks, particularly for network devices. Write and maintain scripts for automating patch management processes to enhance efficiency and reduce errors. Work closely with the development team to ensure the automation process aligns with overall network management practices.
Tool Management and Configuration:
Use patch management tools such as
FortiGate Manager,
Checkpoint SmartConsole, and other relevant platforms to deploy patches. Maintain, configure, and ensure the effective use of patching and management tools.
Incident Management and Troubleshooting:
Troubleshoot any issues arising from patching processes and work with relevant teams to resolve them. Monitor devices post-patching to ensure that they are functioning as expected and that no new issues arise.
Compliance and Security:
Ensure all patches comply with internal security policies and industry best practices. Track and report on patching progress to ensure the organization's network and security devices are up to date with the latest security patches.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with the security, network, and operations teams to identify priority patches and coordinate their deployment. Provide regular status reports on patching progress, issues, and potential risks to stakeholders.

Skill Profile
Education/Certification:
Degree in IT, Telecommunications, or related fields. ITIL V3/V4 Foundation is a plus. Cisco, Fortinet, Check Point, Palo Alto, and F5 certifications are highly desirable.
Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in patch management, focusing on network and security devices. Proven experience with patching tools such as
FortiGate Manager,
Check Point SmartConsole,
Cisco Prime, or similar platforms. Familiarity with patching automation using tools like
Ansible,
Puppet, or
Chef is highly preferred. Experience working with network devices (Cisco) and security appliances (FortiGate, Check Point, Palo Alto, F5) in enterprise environments. Solid understanding of network and security principles, and how they impact patching strategies.
Technical Skills:
Strong scripting skills (e.g., Bash, Python, or PowerShell) to automate patching tasks. Familiarity with DevOps methodologies and tools (Ansible, Jenkins, Git). Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities. Strong understanding of security principles and best practices related to patch management.
Professional Skills:
Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple patching tasks simultaneously. Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Strong attention to detail with a focus on compliance and documentation. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, especially when dealing with critical security patches. Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across different technical teams.
