Tapal Energy (Private) Limited is an Independent Power Producer (IPP). It has been set-up as a special purpose company to build, own and operate a 126 MW thermal power plant to supply bulk electricity to KESC.

PRINCIPAL FEATURES

* The Plant is located on the Hub River Road in the Northwest of Halkani Township, in District West of Karachi, nearly 20 kilometres from City centre.

* The plant comprises 12 Wartsila 18V38 Diesel engines burning heavy fuel oil coupled to ABB generator sets each having a capacity of 10.8MW.

* The project is sponsored and owned by Wartsila Diesel Development Asia Ltd., Marubeni Corporation of Japan, Sithe Energies Inc. of USA and the principals of Ameejee Valeejee & Sons (Pvt) Ltd. of Pakistan.

* The project started commercial operations on June 20, 1997.

PROJECT CONTRACT STRUCTURE

The Project has entered into Agreements as listed below:

* Implementation Agreement with the Government of Pakistan, which provides coverage against Sovereign Risks, and the lack of performance by all public sector entities connected to the project.

* Power Purchase Agreement with Karachi Electric Supply Corp. Ltd. for bulk sale of electricity over a 22-year period.

* Fuel Supply Agreement with Pakistan State Oil Company Ltd. to supply the total requirements of fuel and lubricants.

* Operations & Maintenance Agreement with Sithe Mauritius Limited.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The plant has been designed, engineered and constructed by Power Construction Company BV of Holland. Stork-Wartsila Diesel BV of Holland and ABB Industry of Finland have supplied the plant and equipment.

The plant meets the Government of Pakistan’s Environment and safety standards.
