5 Reasons Why Risk-taking Can Lead to Career Success

Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing. – Denis Waitley

We tend to view risk-taking negatively, often saying it’s dangerous and maybe even unwise. But while some risks don’t pay off, it’s important to remember that some do! According to the Bayt.com ‘Secrets of Career Success in the MENA‘ poll, July 2016, 7.4% of polled respondents said that not taking risks is the biggest career mistake a professional can make. And while only 5.6% of them viewed success as a person’s wealth, more than a third (34.4%) said that being a true pioneer, innovator or creator, was their ultimate vision of success.

Every great lap forwards begins with taking the risk of jumping to the unknown. Great risks must be taken if you want to achieve the goals you’ve always wanted to see come true and do all the wonderful things you’ve always wanted to do. While there are some people who are able to achieve success easily; true success is achieved through taking risk others would find daring, or even foolish.

Today, we will take a look at five reasons why diving head first could be a great way to achieve career success.

1. Taking risks shows confidence

Taking a risk is a great opportunity to stand out and to present yourself as a leader, as opposed to a follower. In order for you to stand out you need to go the extra mile. After all, gaining better knowledge is a great way to expend extra efforts: the more knowledgeable you are and the more risks you take, the closer you will be to success.

2. We learn from the risks we take

Almost 90% of respondents to the Bayt.com ‘Secrets of Career Success in the MENA‘ poll said that taking risks has been important for their career success. Beyond being personally or professionally beneficial, taking risks may be a necessary step in actively pursuing success. Taking risks may not always lead you to success, but at the very least it will, for sure, bring you closer and lead you to the path that will, eventually, lead you to the success you’ve always dreamed of.

3. No dreams were ever achieved by playing it safe

Being a risk-taker means being comfortable with the fact that you may not always know how you’re going to get the results you want to see, and there will be lots of experimenting along the way to find the way to your dreams.

4. Fear of failure will be long gone

No man ever achieved worth-while success who did not, at one time or another; find himself with at least one foot hanging well over the brink of failure. – Napoleon Hill

The road to success is a long one; therefore, failures and challenges are sure to be found along the way. To succeed you have to understand that failing isn’t the end; it’s merely a challenge, or obstacle, to be conquered.

5. Taking risks doesn’t mean being random

Risk-taking doesn’t occur randomly. People don’t benefit from risks without preparing for them and educating themselves on the possible fall-out. Do your homework before deciding if this is a risk worth taking or not. Remember, you can’t just throw a bunch of ideas without seeing the whole process of a project, and what the end should look like.
