“HR isn’t just about adding resources; it’s making sure that these resources are properly engaged.” – Interview with UAE’s Al Gurg Consultants

One of the oldest and leading engineering consultancy firms in the UAE, Al Gurg consultants has been operating since 1969 with multiple branches across the country. They offer a range of consultancy services and have tie-ups with several international firms. In this interview with Bayt.com, Dimpy Patney Dsouza, HR Manager at Al Gurg, talks about her company culture and working in the UAE. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Tell us about yourself in 30 words or less.

I am a passionate HR professional with over 14 years of experience in India and the UAE. I enjoy working in a multicultural background and strongly believe that people make organizations.

2. What's the best part about working at Al Gurg?

At Al Gurg Consultants, being a locally-owned business group, it’s very heartening to see the senior management actively involved in the day-to-day functioning of the business and always empowering key leaders to take independent decisions. An open door policy where any employee is welcome to share his opinion is prominent. Also the culture and diversity of the workforce employed here make it all an interesting place to work.

3. What are the top 3 things you look for in candidates when hiring?

Our selection process initially consists of a brief evaluation of the candidate’s pedigree and years of experience followed by a technical evaluation and job interview. Then we have a non-technical interview where we look for positive attitude, behavioral skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. The ability to innovate is a key element too at our company.

4. Any advice for employers who want to retain their top-performing talent?

HR isn’t just about adding resources; it’s making sure that these resources are properly engaged. Identifying and promoting high potential employees from within is a great motivator. For maximizing productivity and retention, employees need to know the bigger picture. Then these employees would need appropriate coaching and training. Using non-monetary ways to compensate the employees fairly and in-line with the market is also very important for retention.

5. What are the most common mistakes candidates make in a CV and job interview?

Candidates applying for any kind of position should make sure that their CV is crisp, precise and does not spill to more than 2 pages. Candidates should highlight only the vital information needed by the role and prospective employer. Always emphasize the usage of simple language without any jargons. During the course of their job interview, on the other hand, candidates need to be factual, honest and to the point in answering questions that are asked by the employer. Employers don’t expect the candidate to know all the answers, so being honest is greatly appreciated by the employer. Complementing your answers with real life examples or situations always helps in explaining yourself more effectively.

6. What’s the most useful Bayt.com feature according to you?

Bayt.com is really simple and easy to use with clear guidelines to follow. We have a dedicated Account Manager who is approachable at all times. Since we mostly hire for technical positions, we are able to find good talent on Bayt.com. The partnership between Bayt.com and Al Gurg Consultants has worked really well!
