“We celebrate critical thinkers; they are the ones who come up with creative solutions to the world’s hardest problems” – Isra’ Madadha of Mercy Corps

Mercy Corps is a Global Organization, working in more than 40 countries, bringing relief and trying to solve the world’s toughest challenges. They are powered by the belief that the world could be a better place for all. Bayt.com interviewed Isra’ Madadha, the HR Coordinator in Jordan, and she had a lot of interesting things to share about what a perfect candidate for Mercy Corps looks like. Here’s what she said:

1. Tell us about yourself in a few sentences.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Economy Business Management from The University of Jordan. After my graduation in 2009 I decided to pursue a career in HR. In 2013 I joined Mercy Corps Jordan, and I am currently the HR coordinator at the organization.

2. What’s the best part about working with the Mercy Corps?

Being at Mercy Corps means working in an environment with no culture of discrimination. The workmates are active, and teamwork is a culture. But I have to say that the best part about my job is the various opportunities that offer career and personal growth.

3. What are the top 3 things that the Mercy Corps looks for in candidates when hiring?

We look for leaders; the people who work for Mercy Corps are clear communicators who are able to lead as part of a team. We celebrate critical thinkers; as they are the ones who come up with creative solutions to the world’s hardest problems. We expect pride; our staff should be proud of representing Mercy Corps everywhere they are at any time while integrating its mission and believes in their daily life.

4. What are the most common mistakes candidates make in a CV and job interview, in your experience?

These are the two most common mediums that candidates make mistakes in. CVs should always be free of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, with a consistent layout, and they should never be too long. As for the interviews, arriving late is never a good sign, interrupting the interviewer gives the impression that you are not a good listener, and, most importantly, criticizing current and previous employers is extremely unprofessional.

5. What's the #1 piece of advice you would give to professionals interested in starting a career in the development field in the Middle East?

When you decide to work in the development sector, it should be because you want to be part of the positive change and not have certain exceptions in mind; working in this sector is very rewarding when it comes to gaining valuable experience and exposure, it also offers a satisfactory feeling that comes from working towards the well-being of other humans. Bayt.com recently worked with Mercy Corps on the "Keep Them Warm" Campaign, in which Baytheads distributed over 1500 blankets to the less privileged in their community.
