Let’s face it, we all need to take a break or even just a tiny pause from the hectic work routine every now and then. From facing stress and fatigue to risking burnout, an increasing number of studies now highlight the importance of taking a break to relax, unwind and recharge physically and mentally.
However, it is common for people to dread returning to work after being on vacation, especially since they are aware of the work that may have piled up in their absence or even unfinished tasks that require immediate attention. To avoid being overwhelmed by such issues, read these 4 essential tips to help you ease into work after a relaxing vacation.
From booking tickets to finding suitable accommodation, taking a vacation involves a lot of planning and prepping, so, why not plan ahead for returning to work as well? Make sure to take into account any potential issues or approaching deadlines before you plan your travel or anticipate being away. Take proactive measures to address them in advance and minimize any disruptions.
Plan ahead by asking your team to assist you in completing pressing deadlines that cannot wait until your return. In other words, “clean your plate” and try not to take on any new projects or commit to new deadlines until you return from work.
While planning your annual leave, consider including a buffer day or two. By doing so, you’ll get some time to recover from the post-vacation sluggishness and reorient yourself to a rigid work routine. In addition to this, having a buffer day also allows you the time to unpack, prep meals and even do your laundry before you gear up to join the race again!
Tread carefully on your first day back to work. What you do on this day can either ruin all the destressing you enjoyed or motivate you to take on any challenges sent your way. Try and break your first day back into blocks of time with frequent breaks in between. For instance, for every 52 minutes you work, take the next 17 minutes off to avoid feeling pressured. Dividing your time according to the 52/17 rule allows your body and mind to adjust and helps increase your focus.
If there’s one thing that you must absolutely focus on while learning how to ease into work after a relaxing vacation it's getting organized. Tidy up your office space and organize your work desk. Getting organized automatically pumps up your enthusiasm levels, leaving you feeling like you can accomplish almost anything! In addition, make sure to check your emails and start replying to them within the first couple hours of your day.
