A Day In The Life Of: A Fashion Editor

A Day In The Life Of: A Fashion Editor

6:30 am: I am awake and over breakfast, I am already multitasking: TV news are on, and I am reading magazines and papers to ensure myself a couple of news leads and innovative ideas.

8:00am: Shower: Checked! Breakfast: Checked! Notes for my editorial meeting: Checked! I put on my red Manolo Blanik Stilettos (that I keep for very special occasions), with my black pinstripe suit and rush out of the door.

8:30 am: Admin work is always the first thing I do when I get to the office before things get hectic and busy. I have around40 e-mails in my inbox, most of which are spam. It takes me around30 minutes to check the rest and send out my replies.

9:30 am: I have my fruit yogurt on my way to the editorial meeting. We had4 different events covered last night and I have to discuss them with the writers: their stories and pictures and all pertaining details.

11:00 am: Now that I am partially relieved to know what we’re doing for today’s stories, I make my way back to my desk, read the2 features I have received this morning: one about Elie Saab’s spring fashion show in Paris last week (which was totally mesmerizing, if I may say. I am still dreaming about the emerald green evening gown which I am definitely getting for the magazine’s annual ball next month), and the other one about an interview with a top US model (her new clothes line that was recently dispatched to a leading high street chain’s stores around the UK and the Middle East).

1:00 pm: Done Editing. Both features are now ready, printed out and lying gracefully on my rather messy desk.

2:00 pm: My secret vice is spending one hour a day checking celebrity blogs online. I think of it as part of my job really. I have to check their clothes, their bags, their make up on the one hand… and all the showbiz gossip on the other. I am now done with lunch. I prep up and get myself ready for this afternoon

3:00 pm: Thank God I did not get stuck in traffic. I get to the press open day on time, greet a couple of editors I know from competitor magazines, grab a diet coke from the buffet corner, and start gazing around the workshop. I check out news designers, new clothes, bags, shoes ranges.

5:00 pm: I exit the press day with more than10 designer names in hand. I have loved their work and will soon be setting meetings with them. The part of my job that I most enjoy (besides travelling and free designer clothes and shoes of course) is to give new struggling designers a push by writing about their creative work and conveying their message to the audience. I can honestly say I am happy with the outcome of today’s scouting exercise

6:00 pm: Back in my office. Quick brief with the publisher .I will have another2 features edited and sent to him before I go home tonight

6:30 pm: I chop the strawberries I brought with me this morning and take pleasure in munching them with another strawberry yogurt. I am very focused and have exactly2 hours to finish editing and get out of the office.

8:30 pm: I turn off the lights in my office and on my way out, I can see stylists still sketching and playing with fabrics on the other side of the hallway. We’re getting closer to end of the month and the new issue (and the very innovative80s style magazine cover) will soon be released.

9:00 pm: Light dinner with a bunch of friends, wrapped up quickly as I still have to go home and check on the model photos I have. Tomorrow morning, we are choosing the cover face for next month’s issue.

12:00 am: I am in bed reading Vogue’s Beauty Guide that I finally managed to ship from the states. Doesn’t loving what you do for a living count as a pure blessing? I’ve been doing this job for2 years now and everyday is a fresh event day for me!
