Job Description

Title: Technician: Civil Engineering

Main Activities/Responsibilities:


1. Prepare, set up, and maintain laboratory equipment and materials for teaching and research activities.


2. Assist academic staff and students in conducting laboratory experiments related to civil engineering, including but not limited to materials, structural, and geotechnical, and environmental engineering testing.


3. Ensure that laboratory spaces are safe, clean, and well-organized. Maintain laboratory inventory and order supplies and materials as needed.


4. Provide technical support and guidance to undergraduate students during practical sessions.


5. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of a specific laboratory/workshop environment as deemed appropriate by line manager. 


6. Provide practical support for Undergraduate students and research project activities including manufacture of customised devices to drawings.


7. Manufacture customised devices e.g., mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or electro-mechanical apparatus.


8. Oversee the work of and delegate tasks to other technicians as deemed appropriate by line manager.


9. Consult with academic staff in the preparation of work activities for teaching. Ensure equipment is available and functional to enable the workshop and laboratories run successfully.


10. Ensure Health and safety regulations are adhered to and advise users accordingly. Responsible for safe operation of all workshop machinery within the bounds of university and HSE regulations. Ensure all health and safety aspects are addressed within workshop area. e.g., prepare and produce Risk Assessments, COSHH, safety training, maintaining safety records, machine maintenance and repair.

Qualification Required


Educated to at least Higher National Certificate (HNC) level in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline or equivalent industry training and experience
