Art Technician



Job Description



GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised Art Technician to join our dynamic and ambitious Art & Design department. The ideal candidate will be proactive, able to work independently - with initiative and at pace - and committed to supporting both staff and students. Previous experience in a similar role would be advantageous.

Responsibilities:



- Prepare materials and equipment for lessons, ensuring all necessary supplies are available.
- Set up and clear away resources and tools for practical sessions, including printmaking, photography, painting, and 3D Design sculpture.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in the art studios, ensuring all areas are tidy and safe and by liaising with the Facilities team as required.
- Assist in the classroom by providing technical support to teachers and students during practical activities.
- Monitor and manage the use of equipment and resources, reporting any issues or damages to the Head of Art & Design. Take proactive steps in ameliorating issues.
- Conduct routine maintenance of tools, equipment, and machinery, ensuring everything is in good working order. Experience with sewing machines and laser cutting is desirable.
- Organise and manage the art storerooms, keeping an accurate inventory of all materials and supplies.
- Support teachers in preparing displays of student work around the school to showcase their achievements.
- Perform a thorough audit of art supplies and equipment, identifying any items that need replenishing or replacing.
- Assist with the organisation and setup of exhibitions, open days, and other departmental events.
- Review and update safety procedures and risk assessments in the art department.
- Collaborate with the Head of Art & Design to support plans for upcoming projects and resource needs.
- Manage the ordering of art materials and supplies, ensuring stock levels meet the department’s needs.
- Liaise with suppliers to obtain quotes and place orders in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of purchases and manage budget allocations.
- Process and claim receipts for all purchases, ensuring compliance with the school’s financial procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and support to students during lessons, helping them to use materials and equipment safely and effectively.
- Uphold professional standards when working with students.
- Follow all Safeguarding requirements and standards within the school as per training.
- Ensure and promote the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment.
- Proactively identify and suggest improvements to departmental processes and procedures.
- Develop innovative solutions to logistical challenges within the Art & Design department.
- Take the initiative in managing and prioritizing tasks to meet the department’s goals and deadlines.
- Be positive and responsive to emerging needs as the school and department continues to grow.
- Work at pace to meet the demands of a busy and ambitious but friendly Art & Design department.
- Collaborate closely with teaching staff to support the delivery of high-quality art education.
- Contribute positively to the department’s ethos and culture.
This is a full-time position with hours aligning with the school day and occasional after-school commitments for events and exhibitions. The successful candidate will be joining a supportive and passionate team dedicated to nurturing artistic talent.

Skills



Skills required:
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Working knowledge of basic IT packages, e.g. Word, Excel, email.

Skills desirable:



-Relevant qualification or experience in art, design, or a related field.
- Proficiency in using a variety of art materials and equipment, e.g. digital cameras, CAD/CAM, laser cutting, print-making, photoshop.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures in an art setting.

Qua lification/Experience:



At least secondary high school qualification A minimum of one year experience within a similar role Effective communicator (written and spoken) Interpersonal skills, able to operate in a diverse environment Ability to multi-task and cope with peaks of demand
