Job Purpose
A Senior Specialist in Logistics is responsible for managing and optimizing the transportation, warehousing, and distribution processes within a mining operation. This role involves coordinating the movement of materials, equipment, and products to ensure efficient supply chain operations and timely delivery to internal and external stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
Develop and implement logistics strategies, policies, and procedures to optimize transportation, warehousing, and distribution activities, minimize costs, and enhance operational efficiency within the mining operation.
Plan and coordinate inbound and outbound logistics operations, including transportation scheduling, route planning, carrier selection, and freight management, to ensure timely delivery of materials, equipment, and products to mining sites, processing facilities, and customers.
Negotiate contracts and agreements with transportation providers, freight forwarders, and logistics service providers to secure competitive rates, terms, and service levels, and manage vendor relationships to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and performance standards.
Monitor transportation costs, fuel prices, and freight rates, and identify opportunities to reduce transportation expenses, optimize shipping routes, and consolidate shipments to achieve cost savings and improve profitability.
Oversee inventory management and warehouse operations, including receiving, storage, inventory control, and order fulfillment, to maintain accurate inventory levels, minimize stockouts, and ensure timely availability of materials and supplies for production and operations.
Implement inventory tracking and management systems, barcode scanning technology, and inventory control processes to improve inventory accuracy, visibility, and traceability throughout the supply chain.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including procurement, production, sales, and finance, to forecast demand, plan inventory replenishment, and optimize inventory levels to meet production requirements and customer demand while minimizing carrying costs and inventory obsolescence.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental regulations governing transportation, storage, and handling of hazardous materials, chemicals, and dangerous goods, and implement measures to mitigate risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
Develop and implement key performance indicators (KPIs), metrics, and performance dashboards to monitor logistics performance, track service levels, and identify opportunities for process improvement and performance optimization.
Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in logistics and supply chain management through participation in professional development activities, industry networks, and continuous learning initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, logistics, transportation, business administration, or related field; master's degree or professional certification in logistics or supply chain management preferred.
Minimum Experience:
Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in logistics, transportation, or supply chain management, with demonstrated expertise in managing transportation, warehousing, and distribution operations in a mining or industrial environment.
Experience in negotiating transportation contracts, managing carrier relationships, and optimizing transportation routes and shipping lanes to minimize transportation costs and improve service levels.
