Job Purpose
The MEP Engineer is responsible for the design review, implementation, and management of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in residential buildings. This role involves collaboration with architects, civil engineers, contractors, labors, and other stakeholders to ensure that the MEP systems are efficiently integrated into the overall project design and meet all safety, functionality, and sustainability requirements
Key Accountability Areas
Design and Development:
- Execution and review of mechanical (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing systems for buildings, including calculations review, equipment & materials selection, and layout planning.
- Create detailed plans, schematics, and diagrams using design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, BIM).
- Ensure designs meet project requirements, building codes, and regulatory standards.
Project Management:
- Oversee the implementation of MEP systems during the construction phase, ensuring they adhere to the design specifications, quality standards, and timelines.
- Coordinate with project managers, architects, and contractors to integrate MEP systems seamlessly with other building elements.
- Prepare project schedules, monitor progress, and adjust plans as necessary to meet project goals.
Installation Supervision:
- Supervise the installation and commissioning of MEP systems on-site, ensuring that work is carried out to the highest standards and according to design specifications.
- Conduct inspections and tests to verify the performance and safety of MEP systems.
- Identify and resolve any issues that arise during installation, making adjustments to designs or plans as necessary.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all MEP systems comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry standards and best practices.
- Develop and implement safety procedures related to MEP systems, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
- Prepare and submit necessary documentation for permits and regulatory approvals.
Cost Estimation and Budget Management:
- Prepare cost estimates for MEP systems, including materials, labor, and equipment.
- Manage budgets related to MEP installations, tracking expenses, and ensuring that projects stay within financial constraints.
- Identify potential cost savings and efficiency improvements in MEP designs and installations.
Technical Support and Troubleshooting:
- Provide technical support to contractors and site teams during the installation and commissioning phases.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with MEP systems, providing solutions to ensure system performance and reliability.
- Recommend improvements or modifications to existing MEP systems for increased efficiency and sustainability.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency:
- Incorporate sustainable design principles into MEP systems, focusing on energy efficiency, water conservation, and reducing environmental impact.
- Perform energy modeling and analysis to optimize the performance of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all MEP designs, installations, and modifications.
- Prepare and present reports, technical documentation, and project updates to clients, stakeholders, and management.
- Ensure that all documentation is up-to-date and accessible to relevant project team members.
Role Accountability
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred), Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Typically requires 3-7 years of experience in MEP engineering, with specific experience in building services design and construction.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in MEP design software (e.g., AutoCAD MEP, Revit MEP, BIM) and familiarity with energy modeling tools. Strong understanding of building codes and regulations.
- Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex MEP systems and develop effective solutions.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders and convey technical information clearly.
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in design work and documentation.
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment, as well as independently when necessary.
