The Technologist II - Anesthesiology is responsible for working closely with the Anesthesiology Physicians to facilitate safe and efficient provision of anesthesia services to patients. S/he is an integral member of the perioperative team who performs multiple operational activities in the preparation for and delivery of Anesthesia. The post holder is responsible for patient safety during high risk surgery procedures in a variety of clinical settings providing care to Pediatric and/or Adult (Women and Obstetric) patients. The post holder’s expertise and assistance are crucial in the delivery of safe, efficient and high-quality anesthesia. S/he is trained in resuscitation and assisting with other life-threatening emergencies.


The Technologist II - Anesthesiology demonstrates practical skills and expertise in all areas of anesthesia practice and must have a thorough knowledge of the set-up, operation and troubleshooting of all anesthesia equipment including anesthesia delivery systems, patient monitors, and ancillary devices including ultrasound, advanced difficult airway equipment and POC testing. The Technologist II is responsible for maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies and ensuring that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard. The Technologist II participates in the supervision and teaching of more junior and newly recruited members of staff within the department. The post holder practices in accordance with Qatar rules and regulations and professional standards of care.
 


KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:


•    Clinical involvement in Patient Care: Assists in the preparation of the patient for anesthesia and performs pre-operative assessments as requested by the anesthesiologist, positioning and monitoring patients.
•    Assists with anesthesia administration: Assists the anesthesiologist in administering medications, intravenous fluids, or other agents as required. 
•    Prepares and administers medications under direct supervision of the anesthesiologist.
•    Assists in airway management such as intubation, mask ventilation and difficult airway Management advanced techniques.
•    Ensures anesthesia providers have physiologic monitoring of patients notifying the anesthesia provider(s) of abnormal changes in vital signs and/or physical appearance of the patient.
•    Monitors patients during anesthesia: Continuously monitor patients' vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature, during surgeries or procedures where anesthesia is administered. Report any changes or abnormalities to the anesthesiologist.
•    Provides emergency care, including artificial ventilation, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
•    Sets up, tests, calibrates and operates complex physiologic monitors such as anesthesia workstations, intubation/airway devices, fiber optic endoscopes, physiologic monitors and infusion devices.
•    Troubleshoots anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair.
•    Consults Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures.
•    Supports anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or central intravenous and/or arterial line placement and regional anesthesia techniques.
•    Performs peripheral Intravenous cannulation for patients.
•    Supports intra-hospital patient transport, insuring integrity of all monitoring and/or circulatory support devices.
•    Participates in the operating room infection control programs by performing duties such as maintaining cleanliness in anesthetic equipment in accordance with quality assurance programs and appropriate disposal of hazardous waste.
•    Ensures strict adherence to established procedures to minimize operating room pollution
•    Participates in the infection program auditing. 
•    Maintains appropriate supplies and equipment in supply carts, report needs/usage to supervisor as required.
•    Obtains supplies and equipment as requested by anesthesia providers.
•    Assists with patient laboratory tests and results including, but not limited to, ABG's, ACTs and other point of care tests.
•    Obtains blood products and pharmaceuticals assisting with preparation and delivery under the direct supervision of the anesthetist. Maintains immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures.
•    Responsible for the narcotics safe handling: Replenishment, documentation, wastage and the daily cycle count (audit).
•    Participates in patient education programs.
•    Collaborates with clinical supportive departments such as Laboratory, Biomedical engineering and pharmacy.
•    Assists Anesthesiologist in life saving interventions as well as bedside operations in out of OR locations (ED, PICU, NICU, CICU, birthing Center …).
•    Participates in departmental Quality Improvement and Risk Management Activities including audits.
•    Participates in new staff/ student orientation aimed at developing competence and performance.
•    Collaborates with the peri-operative team: work closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth coordination and communication.
•    Participate in the operating theater clinical coordination, provide support and assistance as required.
•    Develops and maintain own knowledge, clinical skills (mandatory training) and professional. (portfolio or profile) awareness and maintains a professional profile.  Provides documented evidence of performance and maintenance of skills consistent with position.
•    Conducts medical education sessions in Anesthesiology department and perioperative services.
•    Contributes to effective use of resources.
•    Performs daily and weekly quantity checks as well as a monthly expiry check to clean supplies used in all anesthesia giving areas including Main Clean Supplies Rooms.
•    Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times and promotes and maintains effective communication and teamwork.
•    Promotes a safe environment and safe patient care by embracing a safety culture and identifying areas of risk.
•    Educates the patient/family especially while anesthesia induction in the operating theater.

•    Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.

•    On occasion if and as required, stand in/Deputize for the Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS - REQUIREMENTS:


Education:       Bachelor’s degree in the field of anesthesia
                        Or equivalent.
Experience:     5+ years of recent experience within relevant specialty.
 


Certification and Licensure: 


•    Certified in Country of Origin - CER.A.T.
•    Eligible to be licensed in State of Qatar.
•    BLS
 


Professional Membership:    Member of Professional Anesthesia Technology Association in Country of Origin

•    Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it applies to anesthesia
