JOB SUMMARY: 


The Optometrist manages conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system in conjunction with the physician. He/ She ensures coordination of care with patients, fellow physicians and ancillary health team providers. The Optometrist is the point of entry into the eye care system for many patients and will perform complete ocular examinations including cycloplegic refractions, ophthalmic diagnostic testing, basic ocular health assessments, prescribing and fitting of spectacles, contact lenses and low vision aids. The Optometrist must be proficient in care of such eye conditions as anterior segment disorders, glaucoma, strabismus, retinal disease, and neurologic problems.  The Optometrist is expected to provide full service complex refractive management for pediatric patients, including aphakic contact lens management, treatment of high myopia, and refraction of post-surgical patients. He / she offers independent contact lens fitting services including aphakic contact lens fitting, keratoconus medical fitting, post refractive surgery or penetrating keratoplasty contact lens fits and low vision evaluations.


QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA


Education: 


ESSENTIAL:


Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry with a minimum 3 year program is require from an internationally recognized optometry school.


PREFERRED:Specialty training in contact lenses or low vision


Experience: 


ESSENTIAL:


3+ years of experience in Optometric practice preferably in a hospital or clinical setting 


PREFERRED:3+ years of Optometric practice inclusive of 1+ years in pediatric specialty practice.


Certification and Licensure:  


  • CT Optometrist license or equivalent 
  • Eligible for licensure in Qatar after onboarding

Job Specific Skills and Abilities: 


  • Familiarity with contact lens dispensing and care 
  • Ability to help patients feel at ease
  • Excellent skills in performing cycloplegic retinoscopy in pediatric patients
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high volume environment
  • Proficiency with EMR
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in concert with ophthalmologists
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:


  • Accountable for accurate and effective cyclopegic refractions and contact lens and low vision evaluations.
  • Ensures clear understanding among patients about the condition and treatment plan.
  • Works independently and in concert with ophthalmologists.
  • Performs diagnostic procedures as needed or as directed by the ophthalmologist including testing acuity, tonometry, lensometry, ocular motility assessment, pupil assessment, color vision, topography, visual field testing, pachymetry, kerotometry, objective and subjective refraction with the phorotor and/or trial lenses and sterio acuity testing.
  • Refers gathered information to the ophthalmologist for further examination, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Prescribes corrective lenses (eyeglasses or contact lenses), provides treatment and low-vision rehabilitation.
  • Administers drugs to patients to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems.
  • Performs examinations to diagnose vision problems.
  • Performs cycloplegic retinoscopy in pediatric patients.
  • Evaluates the results of a variety of diagnostic tests and decides on the best course of treatment for a patient.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with contact lens dispensing and care, including aphakic fits, keratoconus therapeutic fitting, and post refractive surgical fits.
  • Educates patients/parents on insertion and removal of contact lenses and trains patients on the use of low vision aids.
  • Overseas contact lens and low vision aid orders, trail lens inventory and liaises with vendors and procurement to ensure delivery of service in an efficient manner.
  • May rotate to different clinic locations or offsite partner facilities as required.
  • Provides clear explanations and eye care instructions to patients and their families, answers questions and provides reassurance.
  • Liaises with other physicians in case of patients with chronic ophthalmic conditions or if additional medical treatment is necessary.
  • Participates in research if required.
  • Communicates with patients to get detailed case histories.
  • Liaises with sales representatives from vision care product suppliers.
