Key Responsibilities:
- Database Maintenance & Performance Optimisation:
- Manage, maintain, and optimise SQL Server Standard Edition databases hosted on AWS EC2 instances.
- Design and implement strategies to ensure high availability, performance, and disaster recovery.
- Conduct database performance tuning at both the system and application levels, including resource utilisation, indexing strategies, and query performance.
- Develop and implement database partitioning strategies, and manage large-scale databases to ensure optimal performance.
Query Optimisation & Troubleshooting:
- Proactively monitor and optimise SQL queries to prevent performance degradation.
- Identify and resolve complex database issues, such as locking, deadlocking, and long-running queries.
- Work closely with developers to analyse execution plans, optimise stored procedures, and create efficient indexing strategies.
- Utilise advanced diagnostic and monitoring tools to troubleshoot performance issues and mitigate risks.
High Availability & Disaster Recovery:
- Design and implement comprehensive backup, restore, and high availability solutions, including replication, clustering, and Always On configurations.
- Implement and maintain robust disaster recovery strategies to minimise downtime and ensure data integrity in case of failures.
- Test and improve disaster recovery plans regularly to ensure they meet business continuity requirements.
Security, Compliance & Auditing:
- Implement and enforce advanced security measures, including data encryption, auditing, and access control policies.
- Ensure the databases comply with all relevant data privacy regulations, including GDPR and other applicable local laws.
- Manage and audit database permissions to ensure secure access across teams and services.
Automation & Optimisation:
- Automate routine maintenance tasks, including backups, indexing, and performance monitoring, using PowerShell, T-SQL, or other scripting tools.
- Implement and optimise monitoring tools and alerts to proactively detect and resolve issues before they impact production environments.
- Optimise resource utilisation by implementing strategies for managing large datasets, partitioning, and maintaining peak database performance.
Capacity Planning & Scalability:
- Conduct capacity planning to ensure the database infrastructure can scale with business demands.
- Analyse and forecast resource requirements to maintain database performance during peak loads.
- Implement data archiving and partitioning strategies to manage data growth and optimise performance.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience as a SQL Server DBA with extensive experience in SQL Server Standard Edition.
- Proven expertise in managing SQL Server databases hosted on AWS EC2 instances.
- Strong proficiency with query optimisation, indexing, and performance tuning techniques at an expert level.
- Extensive experience with locks, deadlocks, concurrency issues, and solving complex performance bottlenecks.
- Proven experience with high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) implementations, including clustering and replication.
- Advanced knowledge of database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
- Strong proficiency in Transact-SQL (T-SQL) scripting and automation using tools such as PowerShell.
- Experience with security management, data encryption, and compliance with data privacy regulations.
Skills & Competencies:
- Proven ability to handle high-pressure environments and troubleshoot complex issues effectively.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on performance tuning and optimisation.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work with developers, architects, and operations teams.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in identifying and addressing potential database issues.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with advanced AWS services (EC2, RDS) and cloud networking/security best practices.
- Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Redgate, SolarWinds, SQL Sentry) and deep performance analysis using tools like Extended Events.
- Knowledge of NoSQL databases and their integration with SQL Server solutions.
