Introduction:


The Aga Khan University Medical College (MC) was established in 1983, as a part of the Aga Khan University’s Faculty of Health Sciences in Karachi, Pakistan. It works closely with the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the University Hospital to produce excellence in educational programs and medical practice.


The Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research (CRM) is a part of the MC. The Aga Khan University (AKU) has partnered with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) - an internationally renowned Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research, in developing and evolving The Aga Khan University Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research (CRM). The Centre has a state-of-the-art facility for multi-disciplinary researchers to undertake cutting-edge research on stem cell and regenerative medicine. CRM nurtures young researchers (scientists and clinical scientists) in an environment that fosters learning and innovation.

CRM is inviting applications for the position of Manager from outstanding and ambitious candidates with experience in laboratory management including core facilities.


Job Roles / Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Director, CRM and Director, Research & Teaching Laboratories, Medical College, the Manager Laboratory will be responsible for the effectivemanagement, safety, and security of the CRM laboratory and core facilities, supervise a team including an Assistant Manager and Research Associates for the smooth operations/functioning of the CRM laboratory and the Core research facilities. The incumbent will also oversee inventory management, manage financial activities and reports pertaining to the CRM laboratory, prepare overall budget for CRM including running of the labs and core facilities, procurement of capital equipment, and maintenance/repairs. Specifically, the incumbent will be responsible to: 


  • overlook & ensure the functionality of the CRM Lab and core facility
  • oversee, review, and improve operating procedures and policies of all lab administrative functions of the Centre in consultation with the Director
  • analyze and recommend solutions to resolve complex issues as per policies
  • review core facilities request and approve core facilities bills
  • revise costing of core facilities along with Assistant Manager CRM Lab
  • manage ROTA, leave management/prepare backup
  • be part of the recruitment cycle for the core staff.  Identify needs and prepare core staff planning & job description
  • work closely with the Manager CRM to hire and evaluate the performance of the core team
  • arrange specialized training for the core team
  • oversee inventory and ordering of consumables reagents and laboratory supplies
  • review and approve all purchase requisitions, release of payment, and petty cash payments under the designated approval limit
  • monitor annual budget estimate for supplies and consumables for CRM lab & core facilities and review GL quarterly
  • identify equipment and shortlisting along with the Assistant Manager, Lab & Director, CRM. Prepare and plan for budget according to needs and maintain an annual budget estimate for equipment
  • monitor CRM Lab budget, review quarterly Budget Variance Report (BVR)
  • be part of Institutional Biosafety committees (IBC)
  • be part of an Institutional Risk Management system
  • be part of the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee (GMAC)
  • look after the operations & logistics of commercial products (ECL, competent cells & cell lines)
  • manage financial activities and requests pertaining to commercial products
  • assist the Director, CRM in the establishment of new core and related work
  • oversee various extramural and intramural including research grants which order of lab consumables, capital equipment, and others
  • assist in preparing budgets for research projects & grants
  • ensure that the financial, audit, and legal formalities related to awarded research grants are adequately met and endorsed.

Eligibility Criteria / Requirements:


Candidates must have:


  • MSc in a biological relevant field
  • at least ten plus years of work experience in an academic research institution and core facilities
  • at least three years of laboratory management experience in a research facility at the level of Assistant Manager
  • strong biological research background and project management skills, including the ability to track and manage inventory
  • strong management, coordination, and organizational skills, along with excellent multitasking abilities
  • strong interpersonal, and people management skills, with the capacity to work effectively in a challenging environment
  • ability to strategically plan and manage a budget
  • knowledge and understanding of computer-aided inventory/administration application systems.
