In 2023, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2720 called for the establishment of a UN Mechanism, under the leadership of the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator, to accelerate the provision of humanitarian relief consignments to Gaza, with the “goal of expediting, streamlining, and accelerating the process of providing assistance while continuing to help ensure that aid reaches its civilian destination.” Following the adoption of the resolution, the Secretary-General requested UNOPS to provide support to the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator in designing, setting up, operationalising, and managing the mandated mechanism.
The UN 2720 Mechanism for Gaza comprises multiple components, including an integrated database, as the first step of the process to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is envisaged as a real-time overview of the pipeline and incoming humanitarian cargo, allowing for prioritisation, predictability, visibility, and tracking of humanitarian aid into Gaza; Verification of the humanitarian nature of the incoming cargo and facilitation of the clearance process for expedited entry and tracking of goods into Gaza; and Monitoring of cargo flow by UN Monitors at supply chain points, crossings, and verification points, in order to support the validation of the flow of goods destined for Gaza and provide transparency and accountability of humanitarian aid delivery.
At this time, the Mechanism is working along multiple corridors, including the Jordan corridor. The corridor modality under the Mechanism includes a single inspection point in Jordan and one transloading point inside the Gaza crossing.
The Mechanism works with a wide range of humanitarian partners in Jordan including the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO).
