A Day in the LifeThe Senior R&D Electrical Engineer will be a member of the Product Development group within the Robotic Platforms Center of Excellence. You will support R&D Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) systems by triaging defects, investigating root cause, and helping restore systems to working order through a close relationship with the R&D Fleet Management team. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are critical to success in this role, as are hands-on skills and troubleshooting ability.
As the Senior R&D Electrical Engineer, you will:
- Provide rapid response triage (≈25%), root cause analysis (≈75%), and provide recommendation for repair on RAS systems.
- Manage root cause investigations with external suppliers and help drive corrective actions.
- Support design changes related to failure investigations.
- Support reliability hardware investigations.
- Document investigation findings in Medtronic quality systems.
- Work hand in hand with the Released Product Engineering team to share knowledge on R&D failures and support field investigations.
- Support CAPA investigations.
- Maintain Design History Records for work performed on fleet hardware.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline, with 8 to 10 years of relevant experience.
Additional Skills & Expertise:
- Experience with highly regulated and/or safety-critical systems (medical device experience strongly preferred)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong troubleshooting and analysis skills
- Comfortable working in a fast passed, cross disciplinary environment
- Ability to measure voltage, current, and signal integrity with common electrical debugging tools such as a multimeter and oscilloscope
- Ability to read and understand electrical circuit schematics and wiring diagrams
- Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical assembly drawings
- Ability to write detailed reports and work instructions
- Familiarity with electronic design tools, e.g., OrCAD and Allegro
- Knowledge of relevant technologies including:
- Mechatronics / Robotics
- Mechanical and electrical interfaces
- Communication protocols
- Sensors, actuators, controllers
- Kinematics of mechanisms
- Vision and display systems
- Experience with sensors such as Encoders, Hall Effect Sensors, Torque, and Load Cells
- Experience with Ethernet
- Familiarity with QNX and Linux operating systems, both GUI and command line interfaces
- Knowledge of PCBA Manufacturing processes
