How will you make an impact in this role?


The Rewards Controllership organization is part of the Global Controllership organization and is responsible for end-to-end accounting, financial reporting of Global Rewards expense and the related liabilities, which represents two of the largest financial statement lines of the company.


This position is a key member of the Global Rewards Center of Excellence. The Incumbent will be responsible for calculating and ensuring the accuracy of rewards expense/liabilities, data analysis, and reporting of key rewards program financial drivers. This position will work closely with members of the Global Rewards Finance team as well as various other businesses groups to support the control and integrity of the accounting for the US MR program. This is a unique opportunity to work within one of the core parts of the American Express business and brand.


An understanding of American Express financial systems, operational and technical accounting, internal controls, and overall business acumen will be key success factors along with strong interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills.


Responsibilities:


  • Managing Rewards monthly accounting & reporting activities and ensuring integrity of financial results in compliance with the Global Rewards policy and GAAP
  • Timely delivery of management reporting to stakeholders  
  • Support Rewards platform (R42) modernization and transformation
  • Support projects and business initiatives to ensure Financial and Control requirements / considerations are addressed.
  • Interface with key reporting systems and interaction with technologies groups
  • Work closely with all areas of the Company involved in the Rewards process to drive process improvements, automation and efficiency.
  • Support the maintenance of a robust control environment for E2E Rewards.
  • Proactively identify accounting and reporting issues and drive root cause investigation and resolution
  • Management and coordination of audit / SOX / regulatory queries

Required Skills / Qualifications:


  • 3 to 5 years of work experience in Controllership, Accounting or Finance roles with a degree in Accounting or Finance; CA/CPA/MBA a plus.
  • Results driven, self-starter; able to lead and influence without authority
  • Strong communication and relationship skills
  • Ability to handle high pressure environment with ambitious deadlines while balancing long term / short term impacts and multiple priorities
  • Strong collaborator who can work across the Enterprise to drive results while understanding and incorporating multiple viewpoints
  • Solid knowledge of internal controls and overall business acumen
  • Proven analytical skills and attention to detail with ability to identify issues and drive resolution; knowledge of Rewards or the loyalty industry is preferred
  • Strong transformation mindset and ability to drive automation and change management
