Functional Description:
This role is part of the Market Risk Oversight Group - an independent risk management team Within the Global Risk & Compliance organization, overseeing the financial risks and capital management activities undertaken by the Treasury function at American Express. The team’s core remit is to design and execute risk measurement and controls across balance sheet management areas, including market risk, capital management, and funding and liquidity risk.
This role will report to the Senior Management, Capital Management and Market Risk Oversight, and focus on uplifting the capital management program from the second line lens as American Express’s balance sheet grows, and regulatory landscape continues to evolve. The candidate will help strengthen the strategic thinking around capital and build the foundation for second line oversight of capital management oversight.
The senior analyst in this role will gain valuable exposure to the critical capital management activities and processes including stress testing, risk identification and scenario design, internal capital adequacy and assessment (ICAAP), regulatory and economic capital, capital ratio calculation/forecasting as well as develop an understanding of the regulatory framework for evaluating capital adequacy. This individual will work closely with key stakeholders across multiple functional areas (such as Treasury, Finance, Risk, Data Science, Controllership, Audit) to drive strategic projects focusing on program design, process enhancement, issue management.
Responsibilities:
•Help design the foundational components for a robust capital management (oversight) program.
•Provide effective challenge to key areas/processes in capital management, leveraging analytical frameworks for independent risk assessment.
•Assess the evolving regulatory landscape (e.g., applicable guidance, potential new regulations) and internal policies related to capital management/adequacy to ensure continued compliance.
•Conduct independent analytics and develop data-driven insights to inform and support risk management decisions.
•Identify new and emerging risks within the Capital management space, and develop measurement/mitigation strategies as appropriate,
•Partner with the key stakeholder groups across the enterprise to drive continuous enhancements in Capital management processes.
Qualifications:
•Experience in Treasury or Risk Management is preferred (2+ years)
•Graduate degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field
•Ability to think critically, manage multiple competing priorities while retaining strong attention to detail and driving high quality results with strict deadlines.
•Powerful professional presence with the ability to set the agenda.
•Effective communication skills to distill complex messages, prepare impactful materials by synthesizing key insights, and tailor appropriately for the target audience.
•Must be comfortable operating with some degree of ambiguity and defining approaches to handle “white space” (inherent in an evolving business/regulatory environment).
•Strong team player seamlessly collaboratively to resolve challenges in a demanding environment.
•Advanced problem-solving skills and analytical acumen; proficiency in SQL and Python preferred.
•CFA or FRM certification is a plus.
