Job Title: Senior Analyst - Data Governance & Policy Specialist

The GBS Data Office (GDO) supports Commercial and Enabling Units business areas. The Data Governance & Policy Specialist is responsible for supporting a range of data governance activities to protect the company’s data assets, so that they can be used with confidence to improve value, while legal, ethical and security aspects are safeguarded. The role will cover a range of specialist knowledge areas in data governance strategy & operations, data privacy, data sharing, cross-border data transfers, data licensing, data quality management, data policy, compliance & risk management. The role will coordinate and support aspects of data projects within own specialist area, through collaboration and engagement with peers and the team leader.
Typical Accountabilities
Develop robust, standardized processes to ensure that data governance activities are efficient and simple to engage with
Report on performance of data governance processes, standards, quality, and compliance within relevant area(s)
Run and participate in GDO, Enterprise Data Office (EDO) and cross-business unit forums
Provide first line subject matter expertise to internal team members on privacy
Support process owners in documenting Records of Processing Activities (ROPA)
Support process owners and project teams in completing Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA)
Provide oversight of risks and mitigating actions identified in PIAs and Transfer Impact Assessments (TIA), and drive remediation where required
Stay current with data protection laws and regulations in various countries and regions and ensure that the company's data transfer practices comply with these requirements
Identify lawful mechanisms for transferring personal data across borders, such as standard contractual clauses, binding corporate rules, or obtaining explicit consent from data subjects
Collaborate with legal, compliance, and IT teams, as well as external legal counsel or data protection authorities, to ensure that data transfer practices align with legal and regulatory requirements
Manage requests for data sharing with third parties, supporting and ensuring PIAs, TIAs, and other due diligence processes are complete. Facilitate data transfers and/or access as vital
Ensure that processes are fit for purpose, and apply a continuous improvement approach to improve efficiency and timeliness
Provide support to process owners for managing cross-border data transfers
Facilitate the roll out of Enterprise data and AI policies and standards within defined business area(s)
Provide feedback and input on business area requirements for enterprise data policies, standards, and guidelines
Assure data and AI issue and risk registers
Provide data policy SME support to process owners and project teams
Ensure that the organization's use of data stays in sync with relevant licensing agreements, data privacy laws, and industry regulations
Oversee the organization's data licensing agreements, tracking license usage, and ensuring that the organization is following the terms and conditions of data licenses
Maintain records of data licensing activities, prepare reports for management and regulatory authorities, and respond to inquiries related to data licenses
Educate and publicize data governance concepts, policies, and standards through presentations, GDO intranet site, and AZ internal social media
Support central compliance areas (e.g., Privacy Office) in the creation and sharing of educational material
Drive design and implementation of data standards framework and metrics
Demonstrable experience of working in a data office, data governance or data management role
Domain knowledge of life sciences/pharmaceuticals; manufacturing; corporate finance; or sales & marketing
Knowledge of data protection principles and regulation (e.g., GDPR)
Solid grasp of data privacy and data governance principles
Good change management skills
Good administrative and interpersonal skills
Proficient in Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Experience of maintaining information and documentation using collaboration tools (e.g., SharePoint)
Good attention to detail
Conceptual and strategic problem solver
Confident engaging and leading team members at all levels
Good communication, presentation, and influencing skills
Knowledge of data privacy, cross-border transfer, and data licensing
Experience of working in a sophisticated, diverse global organization
