Job Description
SUSE Packaging is the backbone of our software delivery, managing hundreds of packages across SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE distributions. We ensure these packages remain stable, secure, and up-to-date by fixing bugs, resolving security issues, and introducing new features. Additionally, we support older distributions by diligently backporting security and other patches to maintain their security.
We're looking for a Linux Distribution Engineer - Cryptography to join our Cryptography section in the Packaging team and maintain mostly the OpenSSL package. This role is perfect for a software engineer with a deep understanding of C/C++, cryptography, and OpenSSL, ready to dive into maintaining crucial cryptographic and non-cryptographic packages. If you love tackling complex problems and have a passion for Linux and open source, this is the opportunity for you.
In this role, you will:
Maintain and enhance cryptographic packages (e.g., OpenSSL, GnuTLS, Libgcrypt) and non-cryptographic packages.
Identify and fix bugs, address security vulnerabilities, and keep packages updated with the latest features.
Collaborate with upstream projects, the openSUSE community, and SUSE's Maintenance and Security teams.
Participate in the FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) certification process, preparing cryptographic modules to meet security standards.
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Security, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
At least 2 years of hands-on experience as a Software Engineer.
Profound understanding of the Linux operating system and its internals.
Expertise in cryptography and cryptographic protocols, OpenSSL and TLS
Strong proficiency in C/C++.
Superior system debugging skills (e.g., gdb, strace, Valgrind, Wireshark).
Experience with building and maintaining software packages for Linux systems.
Good communication skills and fluency in English, both verbal and written.
Bonus skills:
Extensive experience with OpenSSL, including a deep understanding of its internals, command line usage, and cryptographic libraries (libcrypto, libssl, ...).
Contributions to cryptographic projects in the open source community.
Familiarity with the RPM package format and distribution release process.
Extensive experience in packaging software for Linux.

Analytical thinker capable of navigating and understanding complex codebases.
Self-motivated, organized, able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
Passionate about Linux and open source technologies.
