Job Purpose :
The primary objective of this role is to utilize fundamental engineering disciplines and fact-based decision-making tools to resolve complex product, technology, and manufacturing process issues. The incumbent will serve as the project leader for CPI projects addressing quality, regulatory, or current product improvements for various system teams, including Large Structure, Light Fabrication, Engine Installation & Cooling, and Hydraulics Installation for Large Mining Trucks. This role involves leading and participating in projects from definition to implementation in production and the field, ensuring products deliver superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability. Additionally, the role includes monitoring DPU metrics and warranty analysis to identify emerging issues, improving CPI processes, and coaching team members to achieve the best results.
Job Roles & Responsibilities:
This position represents the journey level within design engineering.
- Strong Analytical Skills: Deep understanding of engineering basics, DOE (using hand calculations, FEA analysis), probabilistic life risk analysis, and understanding structures and performance characteristics.
- Technical Know-How & Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to understand techno-commercial aspects of design, design for manufacturability, and product behaviours in the field. Capable of solving complex engineering challenges.
- Product Development Lifecycle Knowledge: Expected to have participated in at least one full product development cycle, providing end-to-end complex engineering solutions encompassing design, analysis, test & validation, and field issue resolution.
- Effective Project Lead and Team Player: Leverage strengths of large/light structures, hydraulic integration, engine installation & cooling, and machine integration sub-design teams. Foster strong collaboration with component teams and cross-functional teams for product initiatives/strategies. Remove and elevate project barriers, integrate issues with other projects/processes, and coordinate with appropriate project/process owners to accomplish project goals.
- Effective Communicator: Understand and communicate complex technical problems effectively. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Product Quality Focus: Manage and achieve 2/12 MIS product quality goals.
- Team Leadership: Recruit, train, and lead project team members.
Background/Experience:
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 9-12 years of experience, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with 6-8 years of experience, or a doctorate with over 5 years of experience.
- Demonstrated excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments.
- Self-starter with strong technical leadership skills.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members, other work groups, customers, and suppliers.
- Knowledgeable in design processes and tools, including APQP, DFMEA, GD&T, concurrent product & process development, and change management processes.
- Awareness of Six Sigma DMAIC and Lean methodology and tools.
- Preferred project management experience and related certification.
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
- Experience in end-to-end product design & development for Large Mining Trucks or similar mining products, including collaboration with Manufacturing, Test, and/or Product Support.
- Training and experience with Caterpillar’s CPI tools and processes.
- Six Sigma Black Belt with strong product understanding at system and subsystem integration levels.
- Familiarity with design tools, preferably Creo and Teamcenter environment.
