Overview:
We are seeking an accomplished Lead Cloud Database Engineer to guide the evolution of our database technology landscape. This role will be pivotal in defining, designing, implementing, testing, and communicating the architectures, configurations, best practices, and standards for optimal use of database technologies across our organization, both on-premises and in the cloud. The ideal candidate will have strong technical acumen in relational and NoSQL databases within AWS and/or GCP environments, along with the ability to mentor junior engineers and work with cross-functional teams.


Overall Responsibilities:


Database Technology Strategy:


  • Chart the course for database technology at American Express, selecting and optimizing operational database technologies for enterprise applications.
  • Evaluate new database versions, product enhancements, and features to assess their performance, scalability, and security for financial applications.

Infrastructure Engineering:


  • Integrate, deploy, and manage relational and/or NoSQL databases in AWS and GCP, ensuring they meet the needs of various teams across the company.
  • Design and implement high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), fault tolerance, and replication configurations for enterprise-scale databases.

Documentation and Training:


  • Document and present best practices, architecture patterns, and techniques for database technologies to application developers, DB administration, and operational support teams.
  • Develop training materials and runbooks to facilitate knowledge transfer on new cloud database technologies and services.

Collaboration and Support:


  • Partner with hosting, database administration, and operational support teams to operationalize and harden database solutions, focusing on proactive monitoring and alerting.
  • Lead initiatives to improve database security, compliance, and health monitoring, implementing appropriate encryption and access control measures.

Technical Skills:


  • DB Certifications: Relevant certifications in cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP) focusing on database management.


  • Database Expertise: Proven hands-on experience with relational databases (e.g., Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, Aurora, PostgreSQL, Oracle) and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Firestore, Bigtable).


  • High Availability Architectures: Experience designing and implementing GDHA, HA, DR, and fault-tolerant database architectures.


  • Automation Skills: Proficiency in database provisioning automation, monitoring, and maintenance using scripting languages (Ansible, Python) and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation).


  • Security Knowledge: Strong understanding of database security mechanisms, including encryption, access controls, role-based access (RBAC), and compliance standards.


  • DevOps Familiarity: Familiar with DevOps practices and tools used for continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).


Experience:


  • Minimum of 7-9 years of experience in software development and leading technology projects, with a focus on database engineering.
  • Proven track record of successful project delivery utilizing emerging database technologies.
  • Experience mentoring and guiding junior team members and working with cross-functional teams.

Day-to-Day Activities:


  • Utilize Jira for project management and task organization.
  • Daily team meetings to review progress and update on the status of assigned tasks within the DB Engineering team.
  • Work independently and collaboratively on new database technologies and integrated services in AWS and GCP.
  • Define, test, and document standards and best practices while developing training materials for developers and DB support teams.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications in cloud technologies or emerging database technologies are preferred.
