Background & Description


Global Merchant Services is the merchant acquirer, processor and marketing partner for the millions of merchants around the world who accept American Express Cards. The Director, GMNS Financial Analytics COE, is responsible for developing and implementing deep and insightful financially-focused business analytics across the Global Merchant and Network Services organization.


How will you make an impact in this role?


This role represents a rare opportunity to stand up a new team, getting in at the ground level to define success, hire and develop high-potential colleagues, and drive meaningful impacts across GMNS. The role sits within the BU FP&A organization (part of Corporate Planning & Analysis (CP&A) in Finance) and partners closely with the GMNS CFO and his leadership-team to address complex finance-focused business issues. The Director will own end-to-end deep-dive performance analytics and strategic decision support, with a particular focus on turning complex analytics into meaningful outcomes


In addition, the Director is expected to play an active role in enhancing the results and analytics capabilities more broadly across the organization, leveraging technology tools to support emerging data capabilities.


The Director should be a self-starter who is comfortable challenging ideas, deliver superior analytics, and own complex deliverables in a global organization. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual to develop deep knowledge of the GMNS business, and gain regular and meaningful exposure to senior leadership.


This position will build out and lead a team based in India responsible for the following:


  • Lead analytical projects from GMNS President’s Office and GMNS LFO, partnering closely across a wide range of stakeholders. Proactively monitor changes to the internal and external environment, linking them to financial impacts
  • Drive detailed insights on GMNS P&L, catering to diverse customer needs across GMNS CFO and CP&A senior leadership
  • Leverage emerging technology and capabilities to drive improvements to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of planning and results processes
  • Develop tools to enhance the monthly results process and focus on the core growth trends in the business
  • Build, maintain, and leverage excellent relationships with key Finance and Business colleagues.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop a talented team of colleagues

Required Qualifications


  • The Director will begin as an individual-contributor, and hire out their team as they ramp-up in role. As such, proven advanced/expert LUMI and/or similar coding/analytics skillsets (e.g. (CornerStone, HIVE, Python, PySpark) are a baseline requirement, and will be tested for during the interview process
  • 8+ years of experience, ideally in Finance, Data-Analytics, or a related field
  • Advanced excel modeling skills and high level of proficiency in PowerPoint are required.
  • TM1, Tableau, Power BI or other visualization tools experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proven people leadership skills demonstrating ability to develop and inspire through coaching and recognition
  • Academic background (BS required, advanced degree preferred) in Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar field

Preferred Qualifications


  • In-depth understanding of the AXP data-ecosystem is a very strong enhancement to any application
  • TM1, Tableau, Power BI or other visualization tools experience is strongly preferred, with hands-on experience working on financial analytics using large amounts of data
  • Adept at interpreting financial information to derive business insights, and ability to synthesize complex data into an easy-to-understand message
  • Highly motivated with strong sense of accountability, initiative, and a ‘can-do’ attitude. Experience with prioritizing multiple requests and managing tight deadlines
  • Strong customer focus with ability to anticipate needs and desire to meet them, with a track record of building relationships to influence decisions and drive results
