We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of DEP SVS Tech Lead


The success of Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) has allowed us to build on our position as one of the world’s largest and fastest growing wealth franchises. Significant effort has already been made towards the WPB strategy to deliver exceptional products, service, and experiences to our customers. WPB Tech Enabler Platforms enable all Value Streams and markets to bring their journeys to HSBC customers safely, efficiently at speed and at scale. (Mobile, Dynamic Experience Platform and Security as a Platform) represent the front door to HSBC WPB across our global markets such that 40m customers can bank safely and securely with us. Without these platforms our customers cannot interact with HSBC for any of their digital retail banking needs.    


Principal responsibilities:


  • The Sub Value Stream (SVS) Technology Lead owns the Technology delivery in collaboration with the SVS Business Lead.  Drive the success of projects and development of the team.
  • Collaborates with SVS Business Led to define the strategy, objectives, and key results (OKRs.
  • Defines technology solution strategy & vision for the SVS, including use of platforms (internal and external) and long-term technical roadmap incorporating development and reuse of new platform capabilities and features, managing technical debt, convergence, decommissioning, etc. 
  • Manages technology costs including resources, third party spend, and depreciation. 
  • Direction of resources; supports the prioritization of capabilities for delivery, ensuring that it is in line with agreed budgets and WPB strategy; serves as the key decision authority on technical solutions, dependencies and risks. 
  • Lead and mentor the engineering team.

Technology Delivery 


  • Jointly accountable with the SVS Business Led to achieve business and customer OKRs.
  • Accountable for end-to-end SVS technology delivery, managing creation and deployment of technology solutions for customers.
  • Accountable for ensuring end-to-end Technology solutions are applicable to HSBC’s market and regional entities and provide effective and efficient solutions to local market needs.
  • Optimizes VS resource profile over time to better align to VS strategic intent and reduce operational bottlenecks.
  • Accountable for quarterly planning output and execution of agreed objectives
  • Contribute to the annual investment planning, ensuring that critical funding is either agreed or risk accepted to enable the platform to remain resilient and stable and achieve future vision.
  • Driving changes to improve speed, resilience, and quality of delivery.
  • Resolves critical impediments and optimizes flow of work through delivery teams.
  • Manages complex integrations, such as rationalization of legacy systems as scale, migrations of customers or applications from one state to another or managing product and market integrations to create core capabilities.
  • Maintains and observes HSBC internal control standards, implement and observe Group Compliance Policy, including the timely implementation of recommendations made by internal/external auditors and external regulators.
  • Ensures delivery adheres to delivery standards including Solution Controls Frameworks and Business Transformation Frameworks
  • Responsible for providing transparency on the total cost of Technology for the SVS and works with the respective Group Technology functions to understand and influence cost drivers, aligned to the overall direction of Technology.
  • Responding to new and emergent customer needs and opportunities within markets and regions. Stay updated with emerging technologies and best practices and identify improvements.
  • Leading teams using agile at scale methodologies, utilising a DevOps approach to ensure each digital product globally operates on a single code base and is delivered through teams operating a continuous integration and continuous delivery framework and toolset.
  • Performance measurement – accountable for achieving the SVS Performance metrics e.g. lead time in analysis, lead time to release, features per 10 people, agile team metrics, engineering productivity, gearing team ratios,), ensuring that corrective action is taken.

Risk Management


  • The jobholder will ensure the fair treatment of our customers is at the heart of everything we do, both personally and as an organisation. This will be achieved by consistently displaying the behaviours required to support the Best Place to Bank principles of Make Better Products, Sell Them Properly and Keep Them Sold.
  • The jobholder will also continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
  • This will be achieved by ensuring all actions take account of the likelihood of operational risk occurring as well as attending senior leadership forums (first Line of Defence meeting for management and oversight of technology controls environment, key control indicators and issues and actions).
  • Also, by addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department.

Prioritization & Definition of Work 


  • Ensures Technology provides insight into feasibility of delivery for proposed solutions and the SVS’s readiness to build them to support prioritization of backlog.
  • Supports the prioritization of non-feature delivery work (e.g. architectural runway, platform modernization, etc.) by clearly articulating business impact and value to Business Lead counterpart, providing technical SME knowledge and guidance.

System Stability & Operational Performance 


  • Drives high Technology service performance, agreeing SLOs, SLAs, error budgets, and ensuring service resiliency and stability.
  • Measures, track and improves customer focused operational KPIs (e.g. customer servicing time, NPS) 
  • Oversee the response and resolution of production incidents to minimize degraded service / outages and ensure that there is an effective approach to minimize impacts.
  • For our own teams’ incidents, ensure that the corrective actions are taken to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Use key performance indicators mean time to recover and change failure rate data to drive improvements to optimize response times and improvements.
  • Accountable for ensuring that resilience measures and controls are met and do not become overdue.
  • Vendor management – manage the relationships of third-party vendors / service providers to ensure successful delivery and efficient cost management.
  • Review and sign off change requests for your teams’ deliverables to ensure that changes are meeting the right quality standards to be released.

Technology Architecture 


  • Works with the SVS Architects to ensure vision and strategy is defined and feasible.
  • Works with the Value Stream Architects to ensure key non-functional requirements are factored in solution design.
  • Ensures appropriate global, reusable technologies and capabilities are leveraged for efficient technology delivery.
  • Optimize / reduce cost of IT service provision in line with Group strategy / regional / business targets.

Financial Budget Management


  • Accountable for the tracking of spend against budgets, ensuring budgets are adhered to, and managed in line with financial best practice (-10% / on budget)
  • Accountable to ensure the Value Stream charges to recover incurred costs.
  • Ensures effective communication of Portfolio level financial information to Business Executive Leadership 

Leadership & Teamwork   


  • Leads through change and acts as a role model for new ways and standards of working, providing clear and strong leadership to the Value Stream whilst empowering teams to deliver value.
  • Leads and develops a global team of ~100 people through effective communication, clear objective setting, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices.
  • Cultivates an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand.
  • Achieving the correct balance of headcount in the correct location to provide a sustainable and skilled resource pool that can work against delivery of the individual SVS plans.

Relationship Management/Stakeholder Engagement 


  • Manages the relationship with the WPB business and regional counterparts (SVS Business Lead, Regional Heads, COO etc.) and ensure the delivery of end-to-end services that are relevant to the needs of the Value Stream 
  • Represents the Value Stream in relevant governance and leadership meetings on outcomes, performance against agreed objectives and prioritization.

Transformation 


  • Drives transformation of ways of working in the Value Stream through the adoption of the HSBC Agile Framework and DevOps methods & tools 
  • Simplification and reuse of the WPB technology architecture through standardization and reducing complexity of the Technology estate.
  • Leverages emerging technologies to drive disruption and innovation in the way the SVS serves its customers.
