Role Description


We are looking for an Associate Technical Director/Business Area (BA) Manager to lead our Sustainability Advisory (SA) teams in the Global Excellence Center (GEC) team supporting the global teams. The GEC Sustainability Advisory team enables clients across GBAs to achieve their sustainability ambition by providing ‘front end’ expertise focused on strategy, performance management, and reporting, in operations and throughout the value chain.


As an Associate Technical Director (ATD) or BA Manager of Sustainability Advisory, you will lead a team supporting our regional Sustainability Advisory teams across the globe, serving on project delivery teams for one (or several) of Arcadis’ sustainability capabilities (Sustainability Strategy and Program Design, Sustainability Measurement, Sustainability Goal Setting and Achievement Plans, Sustainability Reporting, Net Zero Strategy, Circularity, Nature and Biodiversity etc.) across a range of industries. One of our key global priorities is focused on solving our clients' most complex sustainability challenges. As such, you will be a key member of a variety of climate and sustainability projects and contribute to the development of innovative approaches to solve client challenges, reporting to our Discipline Director. This role will work horizontally across our three Global Business Areas, Mobility, Places, and Resilience, drawing upon their capabilities as needed to support the advisory team and drive demand for the “pull-through” of Arcadis’ other technical services.


Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:


As ATD or BA Manager, Sustainability Advisory, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of sustainability-related projects ensuring client satisfaction, effective project management, and collaboration between Arcadis colleagues. The ideal candidate needs to demonstrate techno-managerial skills. They need to have the ability to lead client and project teams in the successful delivery of sustainability-related projects. Responsible for delivering team metrics in conjunction with the Discipline Director. Key interface with the Discipline Director and Service Delivery Manager for the performance of the team, development of capabilities, and progress on standardization and automation.


Managerial –


  • Provide professional leadership in the Sustainability team (SA) at a management level, establishing and consolidating relationships with senior staff in BA offices, taking ownership for the delivery of the GEC’s technical capability, supporting the delivery of tasks or specialized components of projects.
  • Plan and drive the development of Arcadis’ capability and capacity in the Sustainability team, aligned with Discipline-wide plans to meet project demands.
  • Work with Talent Acquisition and Learning Development to ensure SA team needs are understood and plans to meet them are in place
  • Support the GEC Discipline Director to achieve Discipline targets, team growth, and objectives.
  • Establishing and consolidating relationships with senior staff in Business Area offices, taking ownership of the delivery and GEC’s technical capabilities.
  • Support on bid proposals and new pursuits
  • Drive creativity and independent thinking within your team, including around new digital technologies.
  • Mentor team leads and team champion(s) to ensure high-quality standards and continuous improvement in safe design practices.
  • Take a leadership role within the team, providing direction and lead by example.
  • Manage the delivery of tasks in accordance with Arcadis Management Systems to meet time, quality, budgetary, and health and safety targets.
  • Working to ensure that best practices of delivery are adopted, and it is shared with relevant teams.
  • Promote both the regional and global culture of the business.
  • Early assessment of project and team risks and arriving with appropriate Corrective And Preventive Action (CAPA).

Technical –


The ideal candidate needs to demonstrate the ability to lead project teams in the successful delivery of sustainability-related projects. This role requires experience with sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement, ESG data management, and analytics. Direct experience supporting clients in reporting standards and rules such as CSRD, TCFD, ISSB, GRI, SEC climate risk disclosure rule, EU taxonomy; GHG emission calculation; science-based Based Targets; and decarbonization planning and modeling is highly desired.


  • Producing ESG disclosures and other communications aligned with leading frameworks (e.g., CSRD, GRI, GRESB, ISSB / SASB, TCFD, CDP, DJSI, EcoVadis, PRI)
  • Experience working on NetZero Strategy, Net Zero Target Setting, Decarbonisation Roadmaps, Carbon Offsetting Strategies, and Third Party Verification.
  • Designing ESG performance targets and accompanying strategies and achievement plans, and measurement and reporting of ESG metrics such as for energy, GHG, water, and waste.
  • Support delivery of sustainability materiality assessment projects including performing research and participating in stakeholder engagement and analysis.
  • Structure and perform analyses of data and other information to uncover insights that will inform the development of sales proposals and the design of consulting solutions.
  • Prepare reports and presentations that can be incorporated into sales proposals and client presentations.
  • Planning and carrying out assigned project work to deliver defined project outcomes, manage meetings, engage client stakeholders, and deliver project objectives.
  • Providing quality assurance and coaching emerging professionals to improve analytical and delivery skills.
  • Developing and maintaining strong client relationships and identify sell-on opportunities to generate additional services and enhance client satisfaction, and contributing to proposal development activities
  • Tracking schedules, deliverables, budget, and staffing on multiple projects
  • Specify and carry out research within client organizations and externally to identify and collect relevant data and information.
  • Present the outcomes of analyses at team and client meetings to ensure the insights gained are clearly communicated and propose ways in which these may be leveraged to add value.
  • Further, develop an understanding of the services delivered by Arcadis and of client businesses to enable personal performance improvement and career development.

Desired experience:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant field of study such as environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or business with a sustainability background or related field
  • Minimum of 13 years of professional experience; including 3 years of experience in sustainability or management consulting
  • Successful track record of contributing to the growth and development of a ESG consulting delivery team in a sustainability services business.
  • Passionate about sustainability and have proven, relevant experience at a senior level, including helping organizations set strategies across the range of ESG Reporting frameworks.
  • Instrumental in building and managing a commercial ESG Reporting service offering within a professional services environment, focusing on external clients.
  • Direct line management experience and have ideally led and developed a junior and or mid-level consulting team.
  • Fluent and confident report writer with experience in technical reviewing the work of others and confident in understanding and applying quality and governance standards.
  • Effective project management, client relationship management and commercial skills,
  • Strong management consulting, client relationship, and project management skills and the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to lead project teams, delivery of analysis and client communications, and the development of high-quality deliverables and best practices
  • Advanced research and data gathering skills. Strong Excel and analysis skills.
  • Demonstrates progressively developed problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Exceptional time management skills.
  • Comfort with uncertainty. Interest in collaborating across geographies.
  • Agile and adaptable while navigating foreseen and unforeseen obstacles.
  • Demonstrates emotional intelligence by effectively earning trust through honesty, compassion, and positivity.

Preferred


  • Additional training and or certifications in climate risk or sustainability  
  • Sustainability certification (e.g., GRI or SASB's Fundamentals of Sustainability Accounting credential a plus).
  • Additional training and or certifications in sustainability.
  • Experience with consumer goods, retail, technology, industrial manufacturing, infrastructure, and financial services sectors is preferred
