Does Your Personality Directly Align with Your Career Choice?

Understanding your personality thoroughly will help you land your dream job if you are a current job seeker, or improve your career path if you have already started it. Consequently, finding more about yourself and knowing your personality will help you on a personal level in your daily activities as well as on the professional level.

Your personality does influence many areas of your life, ranging from your simple daily tasks to the more complex ones, so no wonder it influences the career side of life. Understanding your personality and your characteristics opens the opportunity to pursue a career that will help you be more satisfied and productive.

Think from an employer’s perspective, where some companies require candidates to undergo some personality tests and quizzes. These tests are made for a reason. Some job roles require more specific personality traits and characteristics to better perform the tasks. Don’t take it personally if you have been rejected due to a test result, as these results typically show how the person would adapt with the job itself and how they are going to coordinate with the team or with managers and other people involved.

Imagine placing an introvert on a job that require frequent communication and constantly dealing with teams and other members. How would you see that unfolding? Thus, it is essential to never underestimate your personality and how it impacts your potential career.

It is never too late to think about your personality and take an action. Whether your spouse, friend or family member encourages you to take that job you have been offered with all that included perks and benefits, make sure it lines up with your personality. Do your homework and research on the company culture and background, ask yourself is it the right place where I will be truly comfortable and eager to apply my skills set? Is it the thing I would wake up excited for every morning? At the end, you would be spending eight hours a day in that workplace environment; you want to be satisfied and comfortable, don’t you?

Have some self discovery time and try to better understand yourself by pointing out your values, the roles you have played in your previous jobs or in your daily personal life. Knowing yourself more can better help you judge which jobs will bring you more satisfaction and which environments are more suitable for your personality.

  1. Taking your personality and character into consideration, you can look into four main categories. First, let’s start with the type of energy you would consider yourself to have. Are you an extrovert or an introvert? Typically accountants, software engineers and authors are considered under the introvert umbrella, as they enjoy doing their tasks on their own or with a small group of people – verses extroverts which include entrepreneurs and teachers who prefer working with larger teams and are usually looking for inspirations and ideas from the outside world.

  2. Let’s move on to the second category, which is your thinking style. This is split into two sub-categories: sensor vs. intuitive. If you feel that you prefer to work with solid basis like machines, databases and are more comfortable with repetitive and directional tasks, then you would probably fall under the sensory thinking style. On the other hand, an intuitivist is found to be more imaginative, likes to work with theories and to explore future opportunities, such as an engineer or an attorney.

  3. Next up is your value system and this can be split to thinkers and feelers. Thinkers are usually the people who take decisions analytically and would want to use their intellect to succeed. Feelers are the type of people who weigh their values more and always want to be considerate of other people; they are referred to as empathetic and warm.

  4. Let’s explore the last part, which is whether you are a judging or a perceiving person. Judgers are big fans of organized and planned workplaces and are comfortable with setting deadlines and strictly following them, unlike perceivers who tend to see deadlines as negotiable and are more flexible in their work style with a touch of chaos.

Here, we have presented some ideas to help you know more about your character and personality. It is essential to consider your personality when choosing your job. Applying for and accepting any random job would not last long and you’ll not be able to fit into the company’s culture and job type.

When you find a job that better fits your personality, you will eventually find yourself satisfied and learning more, which is also associated with more success and better performance. Just taking any job for the sake of being employed will not lead you to the right career path as it will clash with your personality and you’ll be forced to focus on changing your true self rather than learning the skills needed for your career growth.

There are that you can try; however, it is never enough to solely rely on the results of those tests. Don’t let your personality hold you back from what you truly want to do. Finding out more about your personality is one part of having the perfect fit job; don’t overlook your preferences and your other career goals. You might want to sacrifice one personality trait in order to get a foot into the industry of your dreams. Prioritize your goals, find what you are good and passionate about, and know your skills set and how you can be an asset to the company. Know yourself and your personality and never lose focus on your dream job.

Landing your perfect fit job requires more than knowing your personality. Try to overcome your fears and self doubts by recognizing them and working on overcoming them, rather than ignoring them. Your educational background alone is never enough for your dream job. There is always more to learn and new skills, training, certifications and other areas that would be an asset to help you better land your dream job.
