A Day in the Life of a Chief Technology Officer: Akram Assaf, Bayt.com

You will agree with me that people have different habits, challenges and roles, and that they face their daily lives in unique ways as a result to these differences. But, have you ever wondered what it would be like to live the life of someone else, even for a day?

At Bayt.com, we thought about it -- how exciting it would be to walk in someone else's shoes for a day. That’s why we're launching a brand new series on our blog: the ‘Day in the Life’ series.

And we’re starting this series by presenting a day in the life of Bayt.com's Co-founder and CTO, Akram Assaf.

Akram’s Agenda:

7:30 AM – 8:30 AM

Rise and shine! Usually I wake up to the sight of my kids – two sons, aged 12 and 6, and my daughter (3). My sons are usually up and ready for school when I see them in the morning. Also, this is the only time I get a chance to spend time with my daughter. I shower and dressand -if needed-I help my wife with the kids.

I check my emails on my smart phone while having breakfast. My coffee is something I’m particular about, so I brew a strong cup to brace me for the day – I prefer using my old fashioned Italian stove-top espresso maker. -

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM

I drive to work (Bayt.com HQ in TECOM, Dubai) while listening to the local radio station.

9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Before starting with my emails, I take a look the technical benchmarks including the dashboard of our system, business and technical matrix.

Then, I spend the first few hours of my day tackling urgent client emails and those concerning our online presence. I later have a quick morning one-on-one meeting with my team members. I prefer not to have daily team huddles (we have these only once a week), so as not to end up spending too much of my team’s time.

I always coordinate with with our development team in Amman and with our vendors between 12:00PM and 1:00PM. I try to keep my meetings within that timeframe too, so that the rest of the day is meetings free!

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

I prefer to have lunch at home with my wife. Sometimes over lunch I also catch up on the latest news in technology and business on my smart phone, or my kid’s iPad.

2:15 PM – 3:00 PM

After I’m back in the office, I coordinate with Rabea (our CEO) on certain subjects concerning our products, functions etc. I then review contracts with customers and suppliers and I also work on our company’s product specification documents.

I end the day usually on a VoIP call/chat with Omar (our Vice President of Product) in our Amman office, or in a meeting with our other unit managers on project execution/potentials/challenges, or I am in a meeting with Atif (our Infrastructure Manager) discussing our technological acquisitions.

Before I leave the office I make it a point to visit certain social bookmarking websites on technological innovations to keep me up-to-date on the latest trends in my industry.

7:30PM

I am off for the day.

7:30PM – 11:00PM

Time for dinner at home and some quality family time. I also discuss school with my kids. Post-dinner I usually like getting a little exercise - walking is what I like to do best.

In case I don’t have any social commitments, I spend the rest of the evening reading – I prefer reading online, usually political and social commentary. Before going to bed I go through my emails just to make sure there is nothing urgent that has come up. Heaven forbid! If that’s the case it will be a late night for me, or else it’s off to bed to squeeze in my seven hours of sleep.

Do you want us to profile a day in your life? If you have an interesting career, or simply love your job so much that you want to share your story with everyone, then send us an email at dayinthelife@bayt.net and we will get in touch with you!
